- WANs (wide area networks) A wide area network is a large group of linked computers spread over different countries or a large geographical area. The Internet is the outstanding example of a wide area network.
- Web CAM A webcam is a video camera that feeds or streams its image in real time to or through a computer or computer network.
- Web Designer This is someone who prepares content for the Web. This role is mainly related to the styling and layout of pages with content, including text and images.
- Web page A document on the World Wide Web, often linked by hypertext to other pages.
- Web portal This is most often a specially designed web site that brings information together from diverse sources in a uniform way. Usually, each information source gets its dedicated area on the page for displaying information (a portlet); often, the user can configure which ones to display.
- Web Server A computer that delivers (serves up) Web pages. When a request is made to access a web site, the request is sent to the web server. The server then fetches the page and sends it to your browser.
- Website A collection of web files that have been published on the World Wide Web.
- White box testing White box tests are designed to examine the inner structure of a program module.
- Wi-Fi (Wireless Fidelity) Wi-Fi provides high-speed wireless access to a network or to the Internet.
- Wiki Website The simplest wiki websites allow users to create and edit content. More advanced wikis have a management component that allow a designated person to accept or reject changes. The best known example of a wiki Web site is Wikipedia.
- WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menus and Pointers) WIMP is a mnemonic for the component parts of a standard graphical user interface (GUI).
- Worksheet An Excel worksheet is a single spreadsheet that contains cells organized by rows and columns.
- Workbook A workbook is another word for your Excel file. When you start Excel, click Blank workbook to create an Excel workbook from scratch.
- Word The largest amount of data which can be accessed together is called a word. Computers usually have a word size of 16, 32 or 64 bits. The number of bits which can be transferred in a word is known as its word size.
- Word processing Word processing is the term applied to producing a written document on a computer.
- World Wide Web (www) The World Wide Web is the main way of accessing information on the Internet. The Web is based on millions of pages of information linked together and viewed by web browsers. It is an information retrieval system which enables users to connect from one website to another via hypertext links on the page.
- Worms A worm is a damaging program which can be transmitted via e-mail and copy itself into the memory of the infected computer.
